Highlights from the Schoolhouse Garden's Service Project with PeaceJam

The Schoolhouse Garden service project with PeaceJam was great! PeaceJam is an awesome conference for youth who seek to change the world. Students come from across the Northwest to hear words of wisdom from a Nobel Peace Laureate, participate in workshops and service projects and learn about social change. It was a fantastic experience to work with such a cool organization. Their model of “Educate, Inspire, Act” aligns well with the goals and values of the Service-Learning Program, making it an important collaboration.

Many of the students that attended this conference were already making great strides in their hometowns to speak up for what they believe in and create positive social change. One young man spoke of his involvement with school gardens in the Bethel School District and the challenges he has faced due to his age. He is only 14 and understands the importance of access to growing quality food.

Working with PeaceJam was a great opportunity as it pairs university students with 14-18 year olds to support one another in bringing about a peaceful world. It is a great opportunity University student to serve as mentors. Sharing advice and telling the students about our experiences is rewarding and empowering for everyone involved. What a great avenue to bring positive change!
